The whole point of minimalism is to own few things. Which, for myself, has also meant that I need to trim down my backpack collection a lot. But specialized packs can still be a lifesaver from time to time. One of those packs I have held on to is the Pacsafe Venturesafe 150 sling pack. It is a little sling backpack that I hardly use compared to the other backpacks I have. So why is it even worth it for me to keep? Read on, and I’ll let you know!
What is so great about the Pacsafe Venturesafe 150?
Well, I first found this bag in a sporting goods store in the Philippines, about 4 years ago. It came at a time when i had been backpacking a lot, and occasionally walking through poorly-lit, not-so-safe parts of town (if only to save money on cabs and bus rides). Many backpacker hotels and hostels are not the best places to leave your valuables as you are out and about during the day — so I have always tried to bring my passport, camera, bank cards, and most of my cash with me as I travel. And this bag is the the perfect carrier for all of these things!
The bag has three main zipper compartments, with extra little places within those compartments to stash even more stuff. Two of the main compartments have ‘locking zippers’. The zippers are able to click into a little clasp when completely shut, making it very hard for thieves to open the pockets one-handed (or even two-handed, because they probably wouldn’t know how to unhook the zipper at first glance). Even better yet, the strap has a plastic clasp (which is also concealed) on it that needs two handed operation to take apart. And if that’s not enough, the strap is slash-proof. The fabric of the bag also has something called “eXomesh” built into it that would make it very hard for a thief to slash their way into a pocket and grab something.
For being a little, compact bag, you can still fit a lot in here and have it be your do-it-all travel bag (as long as you don’t have a large DSLR or video camera you’re looking to stash in here). The bag is very comfortable to wear, and if I was ever walking through an unsafe-feeling area, I simply slipped the bag onto the front of my body so I could be sure that nobody was trying to mess with my stuff. I have also found that this bag is great to wear on short bike commuting trips, as it doesn’t jostle and move around while changing positions on the bike.
What could be improved about this bag?
The locking zippers are great, and really help give a peace of mind while traveling. However, there are 4 outer zippers on this bag, and only two of them have the locking clasp. I would recommend that Pacsafe make all of the compartments as secure as the two main zippered pockets. Just make sure you don’t keep anything valuable in the other two zipper compartments! Other than that, this is the perfect little bag for traveling.
I give the Pacsafe Venturesafe 150 5 out of 5 stars.
